Lip Line FAQs

Q. What are lip lines?

A. Lip lines are lines that form in the skin perpendicular to the upper and lower lips.

Q. How do lip lines form?

A. This is a very interesting question. These form as a result of the action of the muscles of the lips, natural aging, sun exposure, and sometimes smoking. This causes a reduction primarily in collagen and less so other substances in the second layer (dermis) of the skin.

Q. What can I do to treat lip lines?

A. Our providers treat lip lines with a variety of modalities. Most commonly with hyaluronic acid, a structural component of the skin. Frequently a very small amount of Botox is added to hold the hyaluronic acid in place longer. Occasionally, if it is very early in the formation of the lines, Botox alone may be used. At times, hyaluronic acid or a laser may be used in the treatment.

Q. How long does hyaluronic acid last around the lips?

A. Because of the movement of the lip muscles hyaluronic acid reabsorbs more quickly than normal. Minimally relaxing the lip muscles with Botox allows the hyaluronic acid to last longer, approximately nine months.

Q. Are hyaluronic acid injections painful?
A. The upper lip is a more sensitive area. To minimize discomfort, a topical anesthetic will be prescribed to be applied prior to your appointment or a local anesthetic will be injected above the area prior to treatment.
